ARCHIVAL DIGITIZATION ASSISTANT
The American Pomeroy Historic Genealogical Association (APHGA a.k.a. American Pomeroys) is seeking an Archival Digitization Assistant (ADA) to handle the digitization (scanning, post-processing, quality control, and progress tracking) for selected collections of archival records including documents, photographs, and museum objects.
Under the supervision of the APHGA's Archivist & Collections Manager, the ADA will follow Archives policies for handling physical assets including photographs, documents, manuscripts, and artifacts, meet standards for digitization, and collaborate on project activities and progress.
The successful applicant will have experience in digitization, archives, or photography, will be detail-oriented, and able to handle historical materials with care. She/He/They should be an effective communicator, be able to work within existing processes, and interact collegially with a variety of people.
Key Responsibilities
Digitize archival materials, including scanning, post-processing, quality control, and progress tracking.
Organize and label digital files with consistent, standardized naming conventions.
Perform quality checks of scanned documents (e.g., orientation, completeness, legibility, preservation standards).
Create both preservation and access copies of digital surrogates, including bulk reformatting when needed.
Track metrics on digitization progress and provide project updates.
Review digital records to verify quality standards.
Collaborate with staff on project activities, workflow improvements, and communications.
Assist with content management systems and public-facing repositories.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
Associate’s degree or equivalent experience.
Excellent computer skills, including intermediate-level Excel and knowledge of file management principles.
Familiarity with Windows operating systems and software.
Experience scanning and digitizing archival or related materials.
Strong attention to detail and ability to handle historical materials with care.
Ability to undertake historic research using historic and modern materials for additional context of digitized materials including the use of artificial intelligence.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred
Background in digital archives, photography, or museum studies with experience handling historic documents, photographs, and objects.
Experience with content management systems or digital repositories.
Hours
This is a part-time, non-exempt position working onsite in our Syracuse, NY office, 20 hours a week from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexibility in scheduling at discretion of supervisor.
