The Millard Fillmore Collection Letters
at Penfield Library, SUNY Oswego
Imagine finding 51 boxes of correspondence that contained information relating to your ancestors? Well, if your ancestor married the brother-in-law of a President of the United States, you may just be as lucky as we were.
You may not think of the Penfield Library Special Collections Department at SUNY Oswego as the first place to go if you are looking to research Millard Fillmore, the Fourteenth President of the United States, but you should. They have a unique collection of primary source documents including thousands of letters written to President Fillmore and First Lady Abigail (Powers) Fillmore.
Abigail (Powers) Fillmore was the sister of David Powers, the second or third husband of Mary Ann Coe. Contained in the Millard Fillmore Collection at Penfield Library are many letters written to Abigail (Powers) Fillmore and Millard Fillmore by Abigail's family members, including David Powers and wife Mary Ann (Coe) Junkins Pomeroy Powers. These letters give the reader a rare and personal insight into the everyday lives of this fascinating family. The photos below are images of some of these letters.
