Mary Ann Coe, Wife of David Powers

David Powers was born 9 Jan 1782 in Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY, the son of Reverend Lemuel Powers (1756-1800) and Abigail Newland (1758-1838). David was a schoolteacher in Sempronius about 1805. David married Polly Wilcox 28 Feb 1808. The couple had nine children. Polly died in OH 17 May 1830 and was buried in the Old New Haven Cemetery, Huron Co., OH.

David served during the War of 1812 in Capt. Rial McArthur's Company in Ohio. He was an early settler of New Haven, Huron Co. OH by 1814 along with his brother Dr. Royal Powers and Mary Ann Coe's uncle, Luther Coe.

David's sister Abigail Powers married Millard Fillmore 5 Feb 1826 in Sempronius, Cayuga Co., NY. On 15 Sep 1832 David represented the Village of New Haven at the National Republican Convention.

On 28 April 1835 a portion of David's property on lot number 6 in Norwalk, OH, including a dwelling, was auctioned at a sheriff's sale in order to raise money to settle a suit brought by Elisha Whittlesey. (This was part of the property that Mary Ann (Coe) Pomeroy Junkins brought with her into their marriage.) On 28 Feb 1840 David and Mary Ann Powers sold property on lot 67 in New Haven, OH to Joseph Rice for $200. (Joseph Rice was the husband of David's daughter Marcia.) About Sep 1840 David and Mary Ann were living in a house rented from Mr. Foreman in Sandusky, OH. On 30 Jan 1841 David and Mary Ann were forced to sell the remainder of Mary Ann's property on lot 6 in Norwalk, OH to satisfy a suit brought against David by his sister Mary Powers. David and Mary Ann later purchased property on Washington St., Sandusky, OH. (Mary Ann would later deed 1/3 of that property to her son Francis W. Pomeroy.)

On 17 Feb 1845 David Powers was elected Justice of the Peace in Portland, Erie Co., OH. On 24 Aug 1845 David was elected the president of the Temperance Society in Sandusky, OH.

In 1845 Mary Ann Powers is working as a seamstress. On 19 Jul 1848 David chaired a Whig meeting in Norwalk, OH. On 2 Apr 1849 David was appointed Postmaster at Sandusky City, OH. He was replaced in this position on 26 Mar 1853.

On 23 Aug 1852 Mary Ann (Coe) Pomeroy Junkins Powers died of cholera at her home on Washington St. in Sandusky, OH. She was buried in the Cholera Cemetery in Sandusky.
